Today I heard the shocking news that Andreas Liveras had been killed in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. He was visiting the Taj Palace for a curry and actually phoned the BBC during the sickening ordeal: “As soon as we sat at the table we heard the machine gun fire outside in the corridor.” Mr Liveras was known to all in the yachting world as a warm and charismatic leader in the luxury charter market. He was gifted in business, starting his career as a bakery delivery-man, having arrived in London from Cyprus as a young man, and eventually going on to own the bakery, which he then sold to Express Dairies. He went on to make a business from his passion for yachts, buying a series of yachts, refitting them, chartering and eventually custom building.
